The Birth Story
Evan & I discussed things and decided to be induced on Kinsey's due date, seeing as I was already 3 cm dilated and Kinsey was measuring large. I arrived at Graham Hospital in Canton, IL at 6 am... registered and then went up to the labor & delivery floor where I got my own private room. Because I was Group B Strep positive at 33 weeks when I went into preterm labor, I had to receive 2 doses of penicillin, 4 hours apart. They started the first dose at 7am and at 8 am began the Pitocen to induce labor contractions. From 8-11am my contractions were painless, but regular. Around 11:30am my contractions became extremely painful. My initial goal was to go through this labor and deliver without an epidural, so after a few hard contractions being coached only by Evan, we decided to call my sister-in-law Amy, who lives right outside Canton, to come and help out. The nurse checked my cervix around 11:45 and I was 4 cm with a bulging bag of water. She said that it looked like my water was going to break at any minute and if it didn't, that my doctor would be in during her lunch hour to break it manually. As the next hour went by, my contractions became extremely intense and very close together... I kept thinking... "geeze, i'm such a WIMP! My water hasn't even broken yet and I can't handle these contractions!" When my doctor came in to check my cervix and break my water, my contractions were about 90 seconds long with about a 20-30 second break in between... I was to my "give-in-to-an-epidural" point... It felt HORRIBLE... So- Doc checked my cervix and I was 9 ½ -10 cm dilated!! 6 cm dilation in 2 hours... I immediately thought to ask..."So this means I dont' have time for an epidural?!" nope.... no time! She broke my water and within the next two contractions, I was ready to start pushing. As soon as my water broke, Kinsey's heart rate dropped from being in the 120's to the 50's... and stayed there... Doc turned to me and said, "With these next few contractions, you NEED to push your baby out,or else we will try the vacuume, and then a c-section... BUT MEL, we DON'T have 20 minutes for a C-section..." I was petrified... They stuck 10 L of oxygen on me and I started pushing. Because my cervix wasn't a complete 10 cm (i had a little section that still wasn't fully dilated), she had to manually push back my cervix as I tried to push Kinsey out... Talk about pain- I can't fully remember- that whole time seems like a blur- but I probably pushed for about 5 contractions (3 long pushes each) when I could feel that she was crowning. I was so scared that she wasn't going to be healthy because we were going on 4-5 mintues of Kinsey's heart rate down in the 50's... Doc stretched me hard during my last two contractions to get Kinsey's head to pop through and when it did, her cord was wrapped tight around her neck. They removed it, and I pushed the rest of her out. She was completely purple/blue and limp, but managed a few good cries when she was suctioned. Evan had just enough time to cut the cord before they took her over to give her oxygen and stimulate her. All turned out great. It was extremely scary and the adrenaline sure was pumping! It took me about 30 minutes just to calm down... I was so shaky. So that's the story... I did it! No epidural! (even if I wanted one, I didn't have time to get one!) Kinsey Lynn is healthy and Kendall Grace is LOVING being a big sister. I have lots of pictures to post, so I hope that you all enjoy them. My parents got in town and have been staying with us, helping Evan and I out... A HUGE thank you to my husband Evan and sister-in-law Amy for keeping me strong and being the best support team throughout labor and delivery. I couldn't have done it without you! God has blessed me with such a wonderful family. Enjoy!!
